The delicate sun shone down the wonderful, open moor. Silence traveled through the moor and light fog clouded the area. The signs of Spring were in the air. A lonely cat traveled through the moor, monitoring his pace. He was known as BloodStar, the leader of WindClan. His fur was a gorgeous calico with wonderful smears of orange and black across his body. BloodStar was about 6 years old, with a leadership level of only 5 moons, or months as twolegs call it. He wandered down the moor, carefully stepping on the soggy, snow-covered grass.
BloodStar enjoyed the Spring season. It was his favourite of all, as it brought news of newborn kits and an abundance of prey moving into his territory. He especially loved the cool breeze that carried so many wonderful scents. BloodStar raised his head, inhaling deeply the wonderful scents of wet grass, trees, and a growing flower or two. No prey was scented in the air and it made him quite disappointed, if not worried. His clan was quite low on food. He sent his warriors out frequently to retrieve prey for the clan. It worked so far, but soon enough, it would fail.
But that was not the reason for him wandering the area at this time. BloodStar had an apprentice to train. MossPaw was his name. BloodStar found that Mosspaw had the qualities of a great leader. He was always a topic of interest among the warriors and other apprentices. BloodStar himself noticed that MossPaw was indeed a great cat with a strong sense of justice and pride. So, BloodStar contacted the young cat and offered to be his mentor. It was a great idea. MossPaw would learn the ways of the warrior, and BloodStar would get some exercise.
BloodStar sat down on a dry spot by a few rocks. He waited patiently for his apprentice to arrive. It would be hard to find BloodStar in the amount of fog that was hovering above the ground, but BloodStar knew that his apprentice would be smart and scent out the wise leader. The black and white apprentice padded through Windclan's territory. He was trotting at a brisk pace, worried that he would disappoint his mentor for being late. That fear was slightly doubled because his mentor was not only his mentor, he was the leader of Windclan. Bloodstar had taken on the duty of teaching everything there was to know about becoming a warrior. Mosspaw was very proud of himself. It was a great honor to him. He felt special and was happy about it.
This tom wanted to show his leader that he could and would be the best warrior that Windclan had ever seen! He was a very smart cat for his age, well above the normal maturity, although when Stonepaw, his brother was around, Mosspaw liked to have fun and not be so serious. Most of the time he would end up in a little bit of trouble. But Mosspaw quickly redeemed himself.
The young apprentice traveled through the fog onto the open moor where he was to meet his leader and mentor. It was difficult for him to see, even though the sun was shinning. It was a very dense fog that covered the land. Using his brain Mosspaw quickly stopped and took a sniff of the air, trying to locate Bloodstar by his scent. Mosspaw caught a very faint trace of it and started off cautiously in the direction of the calico cat.
Only after a few moments and one wrong turn did Mosspaw find his leader sitting peacefully on a patch of grass near a few rocks. It seemed to be mostly dry land there. Bloodstar's black, orange, and white pelt glimmered in the sunlight that was beaming toward the earth. Mosspaw's pace quickened as he got closer to his mentor. He stopped a few tail lengths away from the other tom and sat down, wrapping his black tail around his white paws. He dipped his head in respect. "Bloodstar, I hope I'm not late." He meowed, a fringe of excitement hung on his friendly voice.

BloodStar remained seated on the rocky area. He smiled as he heard his apprentice approach through the foggy moor. He closed his eyes, enjoying the delicate sound of paws against the cold earth. He felt the presence of his apprentice behind him, only about one and a half tail lengths away. The tiny voice of the tom broke through the discord. "Bloodstar, I hope I'm not late." BloodStar let out a delicate smile, followed by a chuckle. "Oh the contrary, my apprentice. You are early." The great leader stood up, boasting his wonderful pelt in the misty fog. "I was expecting you to arrive a little later. I guess all cats make terrible predictions. It comes with age"
He gave a nod to his apprentice. MossPaw would surely be a great warrior some day. He jumped over the apprentice, landing softly and quietly on the damp grass. The first thing that he would teach this apprentice was the crouch position. And what greater way to do it than with a game? BloodStar turned to face the apprentice. He got low to the ground, his belly barely touching the damp earth. He was in the crouching position. He stared hungrily at the apprentice. Then, he crawled slowly closer to him. Just a bit. No more than two measly steps.
"MossPaw" He started, "I want you to get into this position. Body low to the ground, barely touching the earth. Your paws should be silent as they creep closer to your target. Understand?" BloodStar stood up from his crouch. The game was laid out openly in his mind. This would truly be fun and beneficial at the same time. "Go ahead, MossPaw. Show me. Try your best, it doesn't have to be perfect" The great tom sat down on the wet grass, observing his apprentice carefully. Words: 305 Muse: Bleh Comments: N/A

His intelligent mind raced with excitement. It was ready to burst from him and you could almost tell. He tried as hard as he could to hold it in. The black and white apprentice was eager to learn. He wanted so badly to impress his clan, but most of all his leader and mentor. He wanted to show that he had enough self-control to become a great warrior. A smile spread wide across his face as his leader's voice rang through the air. 'Oh the contrary, my apprentice. You are early. I was expecting you to arrive a little later. I guess all cats make terrible predictions. It comes with age.' Mosspaw shook his head quickly, his face turning more serious. The smile fading slightly.
"Oh, no Bloodstar. You could never do anything terrible. You are the best leader there is. You would never make a mistake. I just wanted to make sure we could get as much training in as possible. There is so much to learn if I want to become half the warrior you were. And even more if I wish to be a great leader like yourself." His small, but strong voice rambled on and eventually came to a halt, feeling a little foolish. He watched as Bloodstar jumped down from the dry patch of rocky land.
Oh how Mosspaw wished he could be as graceful and amazing as Bloodstar. The young apprentice truly looked up to his mentor and leader. He couldn't think of a better cat to teach him. Mosspaw knew that there wasn't a cat in the world who he would want to mentor him. The black and white apprentice believed that with his mentor being the leader of Windclan, he would get some experience of what a leader really does. Bloodstar was experienced and that made Mosspaw admire him even more.
Standing before him, Bloodstar crouched down low to the ground, his stomach barely touching the ground. 'I want you to get into this position. Body low to the ground, barely touching the earth. Your paws should be silent as they creep closer to your target. Understand?' The black and white apprentice nodded. He forced his body down low, the soft, damp grass grazing his belly fur. His butt stuck up in the air a little and his tail swished back and forth. You could slightly see his butt swishing with his tail too. Mosspaw wore a serious expression of concentration. He thought he was doing it the exact way Bloodstar had shown him, but it wasn't close at all. He looked up at his mentor and leader. "Am I doing it right? How does this look?" He asked, creeping horribly forward. His paws were quiet, but every other now and then you could here the mud squish.

"Oh, no Bloodstar. You could never do anything terrible. You are the best leader there is. You would never make a mistake. I just wanted to make sure we could get as much training in as possible. There is so much to learn if I want to become half the warrior you were. And even more if I wish to be a great leader like yourself." BloodStar smiled at the remark, happy that his apprentice had proper manners and a great way to make others feel good. He let his happy energy flow through his body, releasing it around himself. He was truly happy at the moment.
He watched carefully as Mosspaw tried to replicate BloodStar's movements and body position. He couldn't help but give a smile as the young apprentice wore a face of serious concentration. It just made BloodStar even happier. He glanced carefully at the young apprentice, trying to assess him properly. The young tom's voice broke through shortly after his attempts. "AmI doing it right? How does this look?" BloodStar tilted his head and started to walk around the tom, observing his body movements. The apprentice wasn't going to learn the position easily, so BloodStar decided to help him out. First off, he gently tapped his paw on MossPaw's rear. "Try keeping it down a little more. You are too focused on keeping your upper body to the ground and are forgetting that the lower body is the main source of noise." He pushed slightly down until he liked the height. Then he moved on to the tom's shoulders. They seemed to be the right height, yet they weren't exactly in the right positions. " Your legs should be shoulder-width apart." BloodStar continued to evaluate the apprentice. He was proud at how the apprentice tried hard to learn. However, BloodStar felt that MossPaw was trying a bit too hard to impress the leader. BloodStar let out a short sigh and crouched beside the tom.
"MossPaw, pay close attention. Your body should be the same level throughout. Your head should match your body. Your legs, shoulder width apart. Look straight ahead and make sure you keep your rear low. You'll know that you got it because your legs will start to burn and you will get a large desire to give out beneath your legs. But you must ignore that feeling and stay in that position. A true hunter can stay that way for hours. Now, try again. However, take your time. It is still early and we have the whole day if we need." BloodStar truly appreciated the apprentice's efforts, but they were quite unnecessary. He felt that all the tom needed to do was spend a little more time practicing his stances instead of focusing on trying to impress the leader. He knew that the apprentice had a rough past. He knew that the apprentice strived for the honour of his family. BloodStar found it charming and inspiring. However, one must learn to block out their desire to impress and focus on the present tasks. If MossPaw kept it up, BloodStar would have to place the topic of forgetting into the young apprentice's mind.

The black and white apprentice held his breath as his leader walked around him, critiquing his stance. The light pressure from Bloodstar's large paw forced Mosspaw's bottom down. He felt a little foolish when he realized how high his butt really was up in the air. He let out an almost silent sigh of disappointment. So much for impressing him. He said silently. Mosspaw thought he was really doing good, but apparently that assumption was wrong.
'Your legs should be shoulder-width apart.' The still excited apprentice moved his legs farther apart, steadying himself. Almost at once he felt the burning pain throughout his legs. His first instinct was to move his paws back together to erase the pain. But his mentor's words distracted him temporarily. 'MossPaw, pay close attention. Your body should be the same level throughout. Your head should match your body. Your legs, shoulder width apart. Look straight ahead and make sure you keep your rear low.' Mosspaw nodded and looked straight ahead. He forced his rear end down even lower, just to please Bloodstar. The burn increased slightly.
'You'll know that you got it because your legs will start to burn and you will get a large desire to give out beneath your legs.' So Bloodstar knew what the apprentice was feeling. His continued to listen to his leader's words, pushing the pain out of his mind. 'But you must ignore that feeling and stay in that position. A true hunter can stay that way for hours.' Mosspaw gave a slight nod. I would stay in the position for days if I could prove myself. I'll show Bloodstar and everyone else how good of a warrior I can be. He told himself, staring straight ahead still. Bloodstar's voice continued on. 'It is still early and we have the whole day if we need.'
As much as Mosspaw wanted to train all day, he didn't want to spend the time just practicing his stupid crouching technique. He wanted to touch and go with every possible way to hunt and fight. He wanted to cover everything in this one day. The fact that he was trying so hard to impress his mentor and leader didn't really cross his mind. He didn't think too much of it. And it wasn't like he thought it could harm any. Who had ever heard of anything like it? A suck-up being reprimanded? Not Mosspaw that was for sure. He glanced over at Bloodstar, still in his hunter's crouch and the pain was slowly fading. Well, actually he was just getting use to it. "How about now? Does this look better?" He asked, turning his head to look straight forward again.

The amount of perseverance within the young apprentice made BloodStar wonder how far he would go. He watched as the young tom fixed his mistakes, with great perfection. BloodStar was amused and at the same time in awe. MossPaw truly had the potential to become a great warrior of WindClan. The smell of a family of hares wafted through the leader's nose. BloodStar closed his eyes, concentrating hard on the scent. It would be a perfect start to the young apprentice's training. He continued to inhale the delectable scent, enjoying it's sweet touch. BloodStar's mind broke free of the scent as the young apprentice spoke. "How about now? Does this look better?" BloodStar squinted his eyes. MossPaw had improved greatly on his second try, with minor faults. BloodStar started to pad around the apprentice. He had to observe from every possible angle to make sure that his apprentice would be able to use the position in the next task.
As he observed, he noticed that MossPaw's position was much like his when he was an apprentice. MossPaw's rear was still a bit to high. BloodStar pressed slightly down on the tom's rear, trying to lower it and level it with the rest of the tom's body. Once he was happy, the wise leader walked over towards MossPaw's head. The leader crouched down, his muscles breaking through his delicate fur. BloodStar smiled at the apprentice. His position was quite perfect and it made the leader happy. "That is much better, MossPaw. I am proud of your improvement." The next task for the apprentice was to try out the position on some live prey. It would give the leader a good exercise and at the same time teach the apprentice the proper hunting skills. The great cat rose to his feet, signaling the apprentice to do the same. The scent of the rabbits still hung in the air, yet it was quite faint.
BloodStar faced the apprentice. It was time. "MossPaw, you have a great position. How about we try to use it on some prey? Follow me" The great tom lead the apprentice towards a group of bushes, the last place that the rabbits had been to. It wasn't nearly sun high yet, giving the element of surprise for the apprentice and leader. BloodStar continued to pad on, until he decided to let the apprentice do the rest. "MossPaw, you lead now. Find any scent of prey that you can. Use your nose to it's greatest." The massive tom waited patiently for the next move of the young apprentice. The lesson was all planned out...
