The first thing you might notice about Benjamin is… Well, actually, you might be surprised you noticed him at all. This is a very tiny cat, even by kitten standards. Perhaps we cannot classify him as a midget, but he is about the smallest a cat can be without suffering from some chromosomal irregularity. Benjamin just happens to be petite. On top of being short at the shoulder, he is a peculiarly slim cat for his breed. This breed is Japanese Bobtail, and this cat hails from a bloodline of purebreds (which may actually explain the stunted growth, if there was inbreeding somewhere along the line, but let’s not get into genetics now). Like all of his breed, Benjamin has particularly rabbitish features. In accompaniment with his bobbed tail, short, stiff legs add to an appearance that is not altogether feline. A short, rounded back does nothing to help matters. However, Benjamin’s face is quite feline, even if overlarge ears top his head, screaming “THIS IS A RABBIT!” even while his scent and behavior deny that he is anything other than feline. Round seems to be a common theme for this cat’s face, with his round cheeks, round muzzle, and absolutely circular eyes. These eyes are particularly noteworthy, as they are a powdery blue hue and possess pupils which point in opposite directions, giving him a perpetually dimwitted expression. White is the dominant fur color, though patches of orange tabby fur mark both sides of his head, his rump, and his tail. More striking than these patches, though, is the bright pink of his nose and the insides of his massive ears.
Personality ;;
Have you ever noticed that the outcasts in a group, at the very least in art if not reality, tend to either become intellectuals or really scary people? Well, not to worry, because Benjamin is of the former group! Even for a kitten, this little guy is one smart cookie. He observes the world through his wide blue eyes and stores away all of the many things he learns. Retaining facts and memories are as easy as breathing to this cat, and if he was a human, you might expect to see him in all accelerated classes. Helping him to learn all the wide world has to offer, Benjamin has the natural curiosity of a feline to aid him, filling him with a yearning to look at new things and to understand them.
Of course this has made him intelligent, but unfortunately, this wit has not spread to his tongue; this is not the cat to look to when expecting a snappy comeback or a witty remark. Benjamin is more likely to reel off facts he’s learned from watching a spider all day than to say anything particularly interesting to another cat. As such, Benjamin has furthered in his progress of becoming an outcast. He lacks social skills, and whether or not this is a result of his estrangement from the rest of his litter, this difficulty in getting along with others only ostracizes this young cat further. The bobtail becomes extremely uncomfortable and awkward around other cats, not to mention shy. He tends to expect them to hurt him, so he generally avoids contact with other felines.
Perhaps Benjamin is a scaredy-cat, since he is in fact feline and is also easily frightened. This is a timid cat, and despite his curiosity, he’ll turn tail and run at the prospect of a dangerous adventure. He prefers safety, comfort, and quiet to mostly anything else, and enjoys being left alone to enjoy a peaceful, sunny afternoon. This cat yearns for calm and stability, though this does not stop him from wanting to enjoy utilizing his big brain. He is afraid of anything chaotic or likely to cause him harm, and this covers a wide range of things, from thunderstorms and loud noises to dogs and sharp objects.
Despite social awkwardness and a tendency to be fearful, or perhaps because of these things, Benjamin is a very gentle cat. He tries to stay out of everyone’s way and avoid treading on tails, so to speak. This, he hopes, will lessen the chances of being attacked. Still, there is something genuinely kind about his soul, and he can be quite sweet, in his own, awkward little way. He means no harm to anybody, for while he certainly doesn’t wish it upon himself, neither does he wish it on anyone else. Benjamin’s a good little cat, if a little odd. If he was not so introverted and timid, he could probably be a very likeable guy.
History ;;
When you’re the smallest in your litter, you tend to get picked on.
Benjamin was born where you’d probably expect a pedigree Japanese Bobtail to be born—a breeder’s. All that this implies applies. For example, Benjamin was never to meet his father, who was a stud brought in by an outsider. He was mobbed by massive amounts of kittens daily, and, since he was born the smallest, suffered for it. The adults in his life were predominantly female. Altogether, Benjamin was quite lost in breeder society, despite how his mother tried to care for him just as well as she cared for his many siblings. Of course Benjamin lived a sheltered life all his first several weeks of life.
That isn’t to say he didn’t face his number of hardships, though. Since he was petite and rather peculiar, the many other younglings who crowded the breeders’ made him the brunt of their jokes, whether these jokes were oral or practical. Benjamin regularly got sat on, laughed at, pushed down, scorned, and disliked by those who were his relatives, his own flesh and blood. Still, as any kitten would have to, Benjamin learned to deal with these things. The result of this is evident in his personality.
As happens, Benjamin was adopted by a family who lived far away from the breeder’s. He wasn’t unhappy to see his siblings go, but he was terrified of leaving his mother, frankly. No matter his dread, no matter his quiet crying, he got carted off to some unfamiliar house, where he was surrounded by those giant pinkish folks instead of other Japanese Bobtails. The worst part of this new location was the smaller pink thing, which was quite fond of chasing him around the whole house. Children do, after all, have that tendency to chase animals. In order to escape this mad thing, Benjamin ventured outside, for the first time in his life. Now, he goes out rather frequently when the bustle of this strange new life becomes to stressful for him.
Still, he has not yet seen another cat. When he does, you can imagine what his shock will be like. After all, his entire life has been spent surrounded by felines who are basically bigger versions of him. Just wait until he sees a REAL tail…
